About this ingredient
Aquamin Seaweed Derived Minerals is a naturally sourced marine multimineral ingredient produced from mineral-rich red algae of the Lithothamnion genus. The algae accumulate calcium and other minerals within their calcified structures. Aquamin products have been characterized as rich in calcium, magnesium, and multiple trace minerals.
Aquamin F is particularly known as a calcium-rich seaweed-derived mineral source, while Aquamin-Mg is a magnesium-rich marine-derived mineral product. Research has investigated the bioaccessibility and tolerability of these marine mineral sources. A 2024 study reported that combined Aquamin-Mg/Aquamin-F supplementation was well tolerated in a small group of healthy older adults.
Human research has also examined Aquamin in relation to calcium metabolism and bone-related outcomes. One study found that Aquamin F affected markers of calcium metabolism differently from calcium carbonate, while a small pilot study investigated its effects on joint-related outcomes. These findings are preliminary and should not be interpreted as proof that Aquamin treats osteoporosis, arthritis, or other diseases.
For supplement formulations, Aquamin can therefore be described primarily as a natural marine-derived mineral source, particularly useful for calcium, magnesium, bone-health, mineral-support, and nutritional formulations.
