About this ingredient
Biotin, also known as Vitamin B7 or Vitamin H, is a water-soluble B vitamin required for several important metabolic processes. It acts as a cofactor for enzymes involved in the metabolism of carbohydrates, fats and amino acids. Biotin also contributes to normal maintenance of skin, hair and mucous membranes.
Biotin is naturally present in foods such as eggs, meat, fish, nuts, seeds and some vegetables. It is also commonly included in multivitamins, B-complex supplements and dedicated hair, skin and nail formulations.
Biotin deficiency is uncommon, but inadequate intake or certain medical conditions can lead to deficiency. Symptoms may include hair thinning, skin rash and neurological symptoms. Importantly, while biotin is widely marketed for hair and nail growth, evidence that high-dose biotin improves hair or nail health in people who are not deficient is limited.
