About Dictamnus Dasycarpus Root Extract

Everything you need to know about this ingredient β€” sourced from our editorial team and the brands we work with.

About this ingredient

Dictamnus dasycarpus Turcz. is a member of the Rutaceae family and is traditionally used in Chinese herbal medicine. The dried root bark is commonly known as Cortex Dictamni or Bai Xian Pi. Modern phytochemical research has identified numerous compounds in the root bark, particularly quinoline alkaloids, limonoids and sesquiterpene glycosides.

Research has investigated extracts and isolated constituents of D. dasycarpus for antioxidant, antibacterial, inflammatory-signaling and other biological activities. For example, laboratory research has identified alkaloids from the root bark that inhibited nitric-oxide production in stimulated immune cells. These findings are preclinical and should not be interpreted as proof of therapeutic effects in humans.

The plant has traditionally been associated with skin-related conditions and other inflammatory disorders. However, the available evidence does not establish Dictamnus dasycarpus root extract as a proven treatment for any medical condition.

Got questions?

Frequently asked questions

What is Dictamnus Dasycarpus Root Extract?

It is an extract derived from Dictamnus dasycarpus, particularly its dried root bark, traditionally known as Bai Xian Pi or Cortex Dictamni.

What compounds are found in Dictamnus dasycarpus?

The root bark contains several phytochemical groups, including quinoline alkaloids, limonoids and sesquiterpene glycosides. Compounds such as dictamine, skimmianine, fraxinellone and obacunone have been identified in research.

What is Dictamnus dasycarpus traditionally used for?

It has traditionally been used in Chinese herbal medicine, particularly for certain dermatological and inflammatory conditions. Traditional use does not establish effectiveness for treating those conditions.

Does Dictamnus dasycarpus have antioxidant properties?

Extracts have demonstrated antioxidant activity in laboratory testing. A recent chemical and activity study reported radical-scavenging activity in Cortex Dictamni extracts. These results are laboratory findings rather than proof of human clinical benefits.

Does Dictamnus dasycarpus have antibacterial activity?

Laboratory research has reported antibacterial activity from Cortex Dictamni extracts. However, these findings do not establish the extract as a treatment for bacterial infections in humans.

Is Dictamnus dasycarpus safe?

Its safety profile requires caution. Published medical literature has reported cases of liver injury associated with Dictamnus dasycarpus preparations. It should therefore not be presented as an ordinary low-risk herbal supplement.

Can Dictamnus dasycarpus be used for liver health?

It should not be promoted for liver health. Reports of liver injury associated with the herb make unsupported liver-related claims particularly inappropriate.

Is Dictamnus dasycarpus the same as Dittany?

The plant is commonly referred to as Chinese dittany or Dictamnus dasycarpus. It should not be confused with unrelated plants that may also be called dittany.

Is Dictamnus dasycarpus suitable for daily supplementation?

There is insufficient safety evidence to recommend routine daily self-supplementation, particularly given the published reports of liver injury.
