About this ingredient
Iodine is an essential trace element that the body needs to produce thyroid hormones. The thyroid uses iodine to make T4 (thyroxine) and T3 (triiodothyronine), hormones that influence metabolic activity and many physiological processes.
Adequate iodine is particularly important during pregnancy and infancy, when thyroid hormones contribute to normal brain and skeletal development. Iodine deficiency can impair thyroid hormone production and, when severe or prolonged, can contribute to goiter and other iodine-deficiency disorders.
Iodine occurs naturally in foods such as seafood, dairy products and eggs, and it is also added to some types of salt. Dietary supplements may provide iodine in forms such as potassium iodide.
For Wellmart.pk product listings, the label should clearly state the amount of elemental iodine per serving and the chemical source, such as potassium iodide, rather than relying only on the weight of the carrier compound.
