About this ingredient
Zinc is an essential trace mineral required for numerous biological processes throughout the body. It contributes to normal immune function, DNA and protein synthesis, cell division, wound healing, reproductive health, and the maintenance of normal skin, hair, nails, and bones.
Zinc is naturally present in foods such as meat, seafood, dairy products, eggs, legumes, nuts, and seeds. It is also widely available as a dietary supplement in forms such as zinc picolinate, zinc citrate, zinc gluconate, zinc glycinate, and zinc bisglycinate.
Adequate zinc intake is important because the body does not store large amounts of zinc. Zinc supplements are commonly used to help meet nutritional requirements, particularly when dietary intake may be insufficient. Excessive zinc supplementation, however, can interfere with copper absorption and cause adverse effects.
